With the industry shift from analogue meters, to digital meters, to now bi-directional smart meters, it’s easy for the average home owner to get confused when they read their house meter, especially once they’ve installed a solar electric system. Like time clocks, the introduction of digital displays makes reading numbers a lot quicker, but only if you know what the numbers represent. Below, is a breakdown of each of your Southern California Edison’s meter displays, and what they represent. This information will hopefully help many homeowners better understand what they’re reading on their electric bill, and if they have solar installed on site, allow them to keep a better eye on how accurately their Net Metering is being calculated.
Screen Flash – SYNC NET
This screen flash simply states, “SYNC NET”. The smart meter is alerting that it’s currently connected via communication to the utility’s monitoring.
Screen Flash – Full Digital Light Up
This is a standard display error check. The meter is letting the observer know that there is currently no issues with the display.
Screen Flash – CODE 001
One of two codes that provide the specifics of the home’s electrical consumption. This code displays the cumulative kilowatt-hours that your home has drawn from the utility grid. Essentially, how much power the electronics in your house have been utilizing and what you have been paying Southern California Edison for.
Screen Flash – CODE 071
This code is only applicable if you have an onsite power generation source, such as a solar electric system. This number represents the cumulative extra kilowatt-hours that are produced by your home’s power source that are pushed back onto the grid. It’s important to note that the power production only backfeeds to the utility’s electric grid if your power source is producing more power than your home can currently use at that time.
Screen Flash – CODE PLD – CODE 252
Internal Programming Code. This code should theoretically never change. It simply relays that the meter has been programmed for utilizing with Net Metering.
Screen Flash – CODE 082
Instantaneous Reading of Electricity – currently being utilized by the house loads.
This number is what your house is currently using or backfeeding to the utility grid.
If the arrow is pointing to the right, the number is positive and you’re using that power. If the arrow is pointing to the left, the number is negative, and your on-site power source is currently back feeding that amount of extra power to the electrical grid.
The SRP meter at your home monitors your daily power usage. Below are explanations of how to read each type of meter for our Basic, Time-of-Day, Customer Generation and Electric Vehicle (EV) price plan options.
Meters
Landis + Gyr
You can read this meter using the LCD display on the meter itself.
To read your kW demand, wait for the meter LCD display to cycle to code 10. The code is displayed in area 3 – see legend. Your maximum kW for the day will be displayed; this is the maximum average load over a 15 or 30-minute interval, depending on your price plan, for the day.

Landis + Gyr solar meter
The Landis + Gyr meter also works for homes with a solar electric system. Indicators at the bottom of the readout show the flow of electricity.

Elster REX meters include the REX1, REX2 and REX2 solar meters.

Metered quantities: REX meters can display both energy and demand values. Energy values may be displayed with five digits. If the quantity requires fewer digits, leading zeros are used. If TOU metering is being used, the meters can display the energy quantity for each rate. The rate identifier shows the appropriate rate for each quantity.

REX2 solar meter
The REX2 also works at a meter for a home with a solar electric system.
Arrows at the bottom of the display show the flow of electricity. The left arrow indicates when your solar system is producing energy and sending it to SRP. The right arrow shows when your home is purchasing power from the SRP system. Blinking arrows indicate the amount of power you are buying or selling. The faster the blinking, the more power that is being bought or sold.

SRP uses the following mechanical meters.

Most SRP meters are dial-type meters that have four or five clock-like faces numbered in clockwise and counterclockwise directions (see Figure 2.). For these meters, you need to read the dials from right to left, according to the direction of the arrow. Follow these guidelines when reading the dials:

- If the pointer is between two numbers, record the lowest number. (Unless it is 9 and 0, and then you should record the 9.)
- If the pointer is directly on a number, look at the dial to the right. If the pointer is between 9 and 0, record the smaller number. If it is between 0 and 1, record the larger number.
- To calculate usage, read the numbers you recorded for each dial from left to right (our example reading would be 9079). To determine how many kilowatt-hours (kWh) you have used, subtract the previous reading from the current reading and multiply the difference by the meter multiplier, which can be found on your meter.

Time-of-Use meters
SRP uses the following meters for some accounts on the TOU price plan (E-26). Below are types of TOU meters, listed by manufacturer. Each meter displays not only your kilowatt-hour (kWh) usage, but other information as well.
To learn how to read your meter, locate the instructions and diagram for your meter type below and refer to the legend at the right.
ABB/Elster (EEM) meter
The display will show a three-digit ID code on the left. The right side of the display will show the description of the code. The display will automatically change approximately every six seconds.

NOTE: When the meter information recycles, a flashing A or B on the left side of the meter display indicates the metered rate; i.e. A=on-peak, B=off-peak. A letter flashing on the right side of the display is the voltage indicator. A flashing arrow indicates the direction of electric current flow.

Damaged meters

Most meter problems are the result of vandalism, tampering, or an accident. If the protective glass cover or the seals on the meter are broken, it may not operate properly. Don't try to adjust or repair the meter. Instead, call a Customer Service Representative at (602) 236-8888.
